Figures:

Saturday: Rain. Highs in the upper 40s and lows in the upper 30s.-from Weather.com

After being blessed with some of the nicest weather in the country for the past few weeks, the rain comes back on Saturday just in time for the first race of the season. To top it off, the high will be the lowest it has been in awhile also.

Add to that, it is Mason Lake, a race with no prize list and a $20 entry fee and it will have some of the biggest fields that this area will see all year. Bigger than any of my races which have the biggest prize lists in the area and are held in July and August when the weather is at its best.

I really don't understand the mentality around here.

Best of all, my dumb ass will probably be out there with all the other morons. WTF?!

Pent up demand...it's stupid. Coming from the northeast like you (upstate NY) where we couldn't even ride outside until mid/late March and then it took everyone a few months to get to top form, it made sense the biggest races were in the summer.

Here everybody thinks they're a pro and must start hitting the base miles in December....a few months later they're all drooling for the starting gun to go off in the first weekend of March....and by late May half the riders are burned out after six months of solid training.

Ha! Racing for money... that sooooo East Coast.

Old as dirt said...

Curly!!!!!!!
I was expecting several hundred dollars for my masters WIN last Sunday ;-)

No, what is East Coast is expecting some return from promoters when hundreds of riders are paying $20 each for a 3 race series with little to no prize list.

And even if it is so East Coast, what's wrong with that? If promoters on the East Coast can put on good events with good prize money why can't west coast promoters do the same thing? Ever hear a rider complain when they get a big fat envelope with a wad of cash in it? No.

Joe, no doubt.

But... if the riders keep coming, what incentive is there for (promoters in the "ditch") to change?

It's true. I boycotted Ontario 1 through 9 in Cali back in 2003. That series was paying out 600 for the 1/2 fields with 125 guys. Well, I'm happy to report that Ontario now only has 124 guys/race.

Kirk, you are right on that. If riders keep coming why change? Problem is that the riders seem to have little voice or little backbone or a bit of both.

It is not that I am saying all promoters should offer tons of money. What I am saying is have your entry fee-prize list-rider participation ratios in line.

Speaking of rider voice - this is RE-FCUKING-DICULOUS:

4H7. Numbers and Frameplates
(a) Number or frameplate altered, mutilated, badly positioned, or covered at the finish:
· First offense: $20 fine
· Second offense: $35 fine
· Third offense: disqualification
( Rider abandoning the race without returning the race number and informing the officials
· $35 fine

If Phil starts fining people for number violations we really need to organize and get this rule changed.
